There are over 450,000 abused and neglected children and youth in foster care in our nation
- more than 55,000 children in foster care in California,
- 4,500 youth emancipate (Former Foster Youth) out of the system every year
- 36 % become homeless within18 months of emancipating
- Only 58% of young people in foster care graduate from high school.
- Only 3% graduate from college
- 51% are unemployed within 2-4 years of emancipating
- 70% of all California State prison inmates are former foster youth
